Cheese - tastic! Guilt-free Sicilian Goat Cheese

In these health conscious days, cheese is often the first victim in the diet of anyone trying to lower their cholesterol level. There is, however, a way out - goat's cheese is lower in fat and cholesterol when compared to cow's or sheep's cheese. Depending on the exact type there may about 40% less fat and 30% less cholesterol in goat's cheese. Goat's cheese is also great for those who are lactose intolerant.

It was with particular pleasure, therefore, that we came across the wonderful Caseificio Trinacria, from the small town of Floridia in Siracusa - South-East Sicily. They have taken the art of producing typical Sicilian cheese using goat's milk to a whole different level.

Of the wide variety of cheese they offer (different levels of maturity, smoked or not, with different herbs and spices) a particular hit was their little fresh cheese in the shape that ricotta usually comes in. These little bundles of taste combine form and taste and can look great both in a picnic basket as well as an elegant dinner.

As ever with small local producers part of the pleasure of trying their products is also the passion with which they explain what they do and the proud look in their eye when they see that you agree and that the result of their hard work is appreciated.

Local food that is good for you - it does not get more guilt free than that!
